Normally, the worst reason for doing anything is
"because everyone else is..."
However, if you're marketing a product or service and you are
NOT advertising where
your competition is, you'll find yourself left behind very suddenly.
In the past, when your customers were looking for a product or service, their easiest
option would be to pull out the Yellow Pages to search for a store or company in
their area that provided the product or service they were in need of. Sometimes this
supplied a name and phone number. Sometimes, an address. On more rare occasions,
a picture advertisement with a list of services or products.
With the Internet today, that same customer can go to a search engine or index and
be presented with a list of businesses that fit their needs, with links to their
web pages. Those web pages are loaded with product pictures and price lists, maps
and phone numbers,
and even online Shopping Cart system which allows the customer
to order products and services -
to leave the house or office.
Perhaps you have a "service" oriented practice such as accounting, law, or medicine
that's already doing well and you're wondering
why you should burden yourself with
the added expense of a website. Simply put, not having a website will soon be like
not having a listing in your local Yellow Pages. In the web world, this is referred
to as a "corporate presence." Even if your best business comes by word-
The Internet is one of the first places a person who has access to a computer will
go to get information. As one source put it:
"the Internet 'IS' information."
Whether
it's on holiday resorts or a specific product or service, the World Wide Web is the
place your customers look to for information.
OK, I need a website ……what do I do now?
1) First Things First
You need to decide what information you would like to offer on
your website. This
can be as brief as one page describing who you are, where you are, what you do, and
how to contact you, or it can be as comprehensive as you wish. You can include as
many pages as you like describing your products and services or offering information
you feel is relative to the needs of your customers.
2) Hosting Packages and Domain
Name Registration
The next step is to choose your ‘hosting package’ depending on the amount of web
pages you wish to publish on your website.
We offer web hosting services that are
fast and reliable all at a reasonable price. Once you’ve chosen your hosting package
you will need to register you domain name as well.
What is this ‘web hosting’ you’re
talking about?
Web hosting is the service that gives a website a place to stay on the Internet for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Ok, but what is a ‘domain name’ and why do I have to register it?
A domain name is the street address where your website lives.
Ours is www.magnificentdesign.co.za
The reason you have to register your name is so that no one can take it away from
you & every year (along with hosting fees)
you pay ‘rent’ to keep that address yours.
3) Getting someone to design it
You need someone to design your website for you.
That's us -
We take your information and pictures, brochures, or other graphics and combine them
to make attractive, readable, professional pages. We’ll work closely with you to
make sure you get what you
want and need.
4) Site Submission
Ok, so once you’ve gone through the expense of hosting,
registering a domain name
and getting someone (hopefully us!)
to design and upload your website to the Internet,
you now need to site submit it.... and before you go scratching your head again with
another question here’s what we mean...
Site submission is how people can find you on the Internet without being personally
told by you. They would go through search engines like Google and type in a word
that would be relevant to your business, say for instance you sell wedding dresses,
they would type in ‘wedding dress’ and then a list of business names, including yours
would come up in the search.
Hopefully we’ve convinced you that having a website is essential
but if there’s still
anything you’re unsure of please
don’t hesitate to give us a call!
